IAM – International Adenovirus Meeting
Initially, after its founding in 1976, the International Adenovirus Meeting was held sporadically. These days, it is organized every two years.
Recent locations where the conference was held are: Dobogókö (Hungary, 2009), Umeå (Sweden, 2012), San Diego (California, 2014), Barsinghausen (Germany, 2016), Cuernavaca (Mexico, 2018), Toledo (Spain, 2020, postponed because of COVID-19), Bol, (Island of Brač, Croatia, 2023), and most recently, Cardiff (Wales, 2025).
The 2020 IAM Meeting in Toledo (Spain)
The 2020 Toledo (Spain) meeting was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the 14th International Adenovirus Meeting was held as a fully online, virtual conference in May 2021.
Toledo would have been a wonderful setting for the International Adenovirus Meeting, as the historic city, located just about one hour’s drive south of Madrid, blends several cultures throughout its impressive history. The city would have offered a very strong and beautiful setting for the science on the conference’s agenda.
What are Adenoviruses
Adenoviruses are associated with conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, and urinary and respiratory tract infections, which, in general, have a rather low clinical relevance.
They can, however, cause severe, even life-threatening, pathologies in individuals with an immunosuppressed condition. Despite ongoing efforts, there is still no approved, clinically proven, efficient treatment for adenovirus infections.
We know that Adenoviruses can cause serious disease in domestic animals and poultry, leading to severe economic losses. It is, however, remarkable that adenoviruses are the most widely used vectors in clinical gene therapy as well.
Many scientists are working to modify the adenoviruses’ natural properties and turn them into effective tools for vaccination, oncolysis, or gene transfer.
The International Adenovirus Meeting is the premier biennial conference for scientists and other stakeholders interested in adenovirus infections.
At the conference, experts from around the globe can share their experiences, ideas, and their latest findings regarding adenovirus detection in nature, the use in virotherapies, the clinical impact and assembly of the infectious particles and their effects on and interactions with hosts.
